We are setting sail on a 50’ catamaran. Catamarans are very stable sailboats, and provide the most internal space per foot of any type of sailboat. The bedrooms are in the hulls of the boat. Between the hulls is the “great room,” which functions as the kitchen, dinning room, school, media room and navigation area.
Immediately behind the great room, outside, is another seating area with a roof overhead. Above the great room, again outside, is the cockpit, where we drive and sail the boat.
For the first time in their lives, the boys will have their own bedroom and bathroom. These function as each individual’s personal space, which is critical for everyone to have when living together in such close quarters.
To access shore we have a rigid inflatable dingy (RIB) with an outboard motor. This functions as our “car” and is critical for a trip such as ours. Other amenities on the sailboat include a diesel generator, water maker, washer/dryer, solar panels, wind generator, and the typical items one would expect to find in a kitchen.
At the moment, the boat’s interior is going through a major refit. We are pleased to be working with mega yacht design sensation Patric Knowles for the refit. He is helping to design Scott’s office and build out the boys’ rooms in addition to helping with a complete makeover to improve the look and comfort of the boat.
